The huge island of Sumatra has a list of nearly 400 resident birds, with over 25 endemics. We have a great opportunity to see these and many more widespread species of the region, from the broadbills, trogons, and hornbills of the lowland rainforest to the montane endemics.

We will visit two excellent national parks—the lowland rainforest of Way Kambas in the south, and the montane forests on the slopes of the spectacular volcano of Gunung Kerinci in the center of the island. We have a good chance of finding the endangered White-winged Duck at Way Kambas, as well as many other lowland specialties, including the rare Storm's Stork. This is one of the best places anywhere for a great selection of rare nightbirds such as the bizarre Large Frogmouth.

At Kerinci we will explore the lush montane and submontane forests in search of Sumatra's endemic species including Salvadori's Pheasant, Schneider's and Graceful pittas, Cream-striped and Spot-necked bulbuls, Sumatran Treepie, Rusty-breasted Wren-Babbler, and Shiny and Sumatran whistling-thrushes.

Charming and comfortable accommodations at Way Kambas with great birding in the gardens; lodge at Kerinci more basic but clean, friendly, and comfortable; generally relaxed pace with easy walking except at Kerinci, which is a little more strenuous on the higher slopes; warm and humid in the lowlands, cool to cold in the mountains.
