Past Field Lists:
Pleasant birding at one of the greatest migration hotspots in Europe.
Each autumn, an estimated 500 million birds depart Scandinavia on their way to wintering areas in Western Europe, the Mediterranean, and Africa. Situated at the southern tip of Sweden, Falsterbo is the last point of land that many of these migrants reach before crossing the Baltic Sea to Denmark and Germany, an avian bottleneck resulting in one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in all of Europe. Counters stationed at Falsterbo annually record four million or more birds passing by in visible migration, sometimes thousands in a single day.
Our visit to this migration mecca is timed for peak diversity of species, including 20+ species of shorebirds, and many tropical migrants including warblers, flycatchers, and flocks of Tree Pipits, Western Yellow Wagtails, and swallows. Shorter distance migrants like Common Wood-Pigeon, Rook, and Eurasian Siskin should be showing migratory movements as well. Falsterbo is particularly well-known for raptor migration, and we should see a long list including Eurasian Marsh-Harrier, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Red Kite, White-tailed Eagle, Common Buzzard, Eurasian Kestrel, Eurasian Hobby, and peak flights of European Honey-buzzard.
From a home base in Falsterbo, much of our time will be spent exploring nearby gardens, beaches, bays, marshes, and pastures. When migration is slow, we will venture out to a few favorite lakes and woodlands within an approximately two-hour drive to search for additional species such as Little and Great Crested grebes, Black Kite, Common Crane, Black and Great Spotted woodpeckers, Eurasian Nuthatch, Common Kingfisher, and Bearded Reedling.
Excellent food and comfortable lodging; most nights at one location; much time on foot in easy terrain; pleasantly cool climate.
