The Bismarck Archipelago is wholly included within the territory of Papua New Guinea and contains a myriad of gorgeous coral fringed, forest–covered islands. Nearly all of them support at least one endemic species of bird. By far, the richest of these islands is New Britain, which is rarely visited by birders. We will stay at Walindi Plantation, one of the most delightfully appointed dive resorts, located right on the doorstep of some of the finest coral reefs to be found anywhere in the world. As if this weren’t enough, tropical lowland and hill forests, just brimming with birds, surround the plantation, including such spectacular species as Dwarf Cassowary; 15 species of pigeons and doves; seven kingfishers, including the extraordinary Black-backed Paradise-Kingfisher; Blue-eyed Cockatoo; sensational Eastern Black-capped Lories in the trees around our chalets; and a host of nifty monarchs, fantails, myzomelas, and munias. And then there is always something special. Perhaps we’ll find the elusive Golden Owl, or the virtually unknown Talasea Thrush.
