Islands of mesmerizing beauty anchor a tropical Pacific voyage rich in seabirds and endemic landbirds, marvelous snorkeling, and Polynesian culture.
For today’s traveler, the islands of the South Pacific are visages of paradise—verdant, emerald isles rising from turquoise lagoons; white-sand beaches framed by lanky palms; and coral reefs teeming with colorful tropical fishes. Nowhere are such visions of enchantment more true to life than Central Polynesia where legendary place names like Fiji, Bora Bora, and Tahiti fuel the imagination.
In collaboration with Zegrahm Expeditions, we present a transect of the central South Pacific from Fiji to Tahiti, island-hopping through a tropical realm of lush volcanic islands, spectacular reefs, coral atolls, and postcard-perfect beaches. This multi-interest program will appeal to birders and non-birders alike. Activities include Zodiac excursions to view colonies of breeding seabirds, world-class snorkeling in beautiful marine environments, searching for endemic landbirds, and witnessing the rich traditions of Polynesian culture.
WEBINAR: With Victor Emanuel & Barry Lyon, February 8, 2017
Traveling aboard the 100-guest, all-suite Caledonian Sky, we’ll hew to a route that visits a host of islands famous in travel lore, places like Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands, in addition to a number of smaller islands and islets accessible only by ship. Fabulous seabirding is assured, with opportunities to see legions of tropicbirds, frigatebirds, boobies, petrels, shearwaters, noddies, and terns, while the landbirding will reveal a host of richly-colored fruit-doves, lorikeets, kingfishers, flycatchers, and more.
Highlights include birding in beautiful Bouma National Park on Fiji for Orange Dove, Collared Lory, Red Shining-Parrot, and Blue-crested Flycatcher; laying eyes on the stunning beaches of Futuna, a natural treasure of an island—home to Red-footed Boobies, Collared Kingfishers, and Blue-crowned Lorikeets; snorkeling on the reefs of Pukapuka in the Cook Islands; witnessing clouds of seabirds at Takutea; landing at Aitutaki where the island’s central peak rises above a reef-encircled lagoon; and calling at legendary Bora Bora, where an exquisite sapphire-hued lagoon hosts graceful stingrays and colorful fish such as basslets and butterfly fishes. Ultimately we’ll conclude at Tahiti, home to sublime scenery and a host of cultural and natural attractions.
All travel and meals aboard a lovely small adventure cruise ship; lots of activity options for birders and non-birders: plenty of shore excursions, snorkeling outings, and cultural performances.
