Alim Island

An exciting and thematically diverse program rich in nature and culture; opportunities for birding, sightseeing, and snorkeling in many rarely visited locations.

Few destinations on earth stir the imagination like Papua New Guinea. Mysterious. Remote. Evocative. The mind brims with thoughts of darkened rainforests, native villages, and birds-of-paradise.

VENT has operated land-based tours to Papua New Guinea for many years, but now, for the first time, we will visit PNG by ship. Featuring an itinerary that includes locations we’ve never previously visited, we’ll explore much of the island’s eastern and northern coastlines in addition to seldom visited coastal islands. This trip’s multi-themed approach guarantees something for everyone, whether one’s interest is in birding and natural history, snorkeling, sightseeing, or cultural attractions.

Cruising aboard the luxurious Caledonian Sky, we’ll visit islands with names like Bonarua, Fergusson, Tingwon, and Tami, searching for a bevy of marvelous tropical birds. White-bibbed Fruit-Dove, Purple-bellied Lory, Nicobar Pigeon, Goldie’s Bird-of-Paradise, and Metallic Starling offer a tantalizing representation of what is possible. At sites like Tufi, Madang, and Rabaul, we can visit indigenous villages to enjoy traditional dances and learn about local customs. Meanwhile, the waters surrounding Papua New Guinea offer a further dimension to the trip. Snorkeling excursions will be available on many days, where time in the water may reveal the undersea wonders of the Coral Sea, or brilliantly colored fish hugging a fringing reef. Finally, those with a weak spot for stunning visual scenery will find joy in the fact that Papua New Guinea is known for some of the world’s most luxuriant tropical landscapes.

This trip is one in a series of departures that VENT will operate in collaboration with Zegrahm Expeditions.

All travel and meals aboard an elegant small adventure cruise ship; activity options for birders and non-birders alike with shore excursions, snorkeling outings, and cultural performances; weather warm-to-hot and humid.
