AN INVITATION TO BIRD ADAK

With great anticipation, VENT is joining forces with Dan Wetzel of NatureAlaska to offer birders the opportunity to bird Adak Island, Alaska in May 2006. Adak presents a rare opportunity to search for Asiatic vagrants and Bering Sea specialties in a great Alaskan outpost. Good accommodations and transportation, and Adak’s extensive road system will allow us to cover much more ground and many more habitats than in other Bering Sea locations.

In addition to the prized resident species, we will spend time seeking out lost Eurasian species. The list of vagrants that have occurred here includes a breathtaking assortment of Eurasian waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerines. Adak also offers a tremendous chance to see a variety of seabirds, including murrelets, auklets, and puffins. A major attraction is the highly sought-after Whiskered Auklet, which we expect to find, as well as Laysan Albatross and other seabirds.

The vagrant potential of Adak is great, and with a full week to cover the island, we should be well positioned to find whatever is there.
