Dear friends,

VENT will kick off the new year with our annual cruise to Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands, January 5–26, 2017. Looking ahead to this voyage, I have some important news to share: first, owing to a fantastic turnout of participants, VENT leader Rafael Galvez will join Brian Gibbons as co-leader for this trip; and second, I am excited to announce that space on board the ship has become newly available to VENT travelers!

For decades, I have regarded our cruise to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands as one of the finest in our entire repertoire of tours. I am fortunate to have been to this destination about ten times, and I can honestly say that in terms of the spectacles of wildlife, caliber of scenery, and singularity of the overall experience, a trip here is second to none.

This expedition will be operated by our longtime travel partner, Zegrahm Expeditions, one of the finest names in adventure travel, and I’m pleased to let you know that Zegrahm President, Van Perry, will also be along for the company’s first “President’s Cruise.” This summer I enjoyed meeting with Van at Zegrahm’s Seattle headquarters. He is excited to join VENT guests on this remarkable voyage, who in turn will enjoy an extra special trip with him on board.

Our comprehensive itinerary offers maximum opportunities for viewing the birds and mammals of the Antarctic Peninsula AND the South Georgia and Falklands archipelagos—essential locations for birders and natural history enthusiasts alike, as most of the wildlife is found on these two remote island outposts. This wildlife includes thousands of penguins representing at least six different species; six species or subspecies of albatross; giant-petrels; and a spectacular array of petrels, shearwaters, storm-petrels, diving-petrels, and skuas along with seals, whales, and other marine mammals. Complementing the wildlife pageants are scenic backdrops of unsurpassed grandeur: soaring mountains, sculpted icebergs, ancient glaciers, and ice-clogged waterways.

Traveling aboard the premier expedition vessel Ocean Diamond, we’ll traverse one of the most remote corners of the world in total comfort, enjoying beautiful accommodations and high quality cuisine.

In Brian and Rafael, you will travel with expert VENT leaders whose guidance and personal attention will ensure a fulfilling travel experience. Brian ranks among our most experienced tour leaders and has guided previous trips to Antarctica, as well as destinations throughout North America, Europe, Central America, and Mexico. Rafael has been leading VENT tours for several years. He is a remarkably talented field observer, teacher, and artist—a true renaissance man. Brian and Rafael will make a wonderful team, and I can’t think of two finer leaders with whom to travel to the “White Continent” and beyond!

Cabins begin at $17,980 in double occupancy. To reserve one of these newly available spaces, or for more information, I encourage you to contact Greg Lopez in the VENT office via phone (512-328-5221) or email (
