Dear friends:

On Wednesday, August 16, my colleague Barry Lyon and I will host a free webinar, the next in our series of webinars in collaboration with Zegrahm Expeditions, in which we’ll discuss VENT’s upcoming cruise: Circumnavigation of Hokkaido: Japan’s Wild Island, May 19-June 3, 2018.

For this special trip, we’ll travel aboard the beautiful Caledonian Sky, voyaging from Honshu (“mainland” Japan) north through the Sea of Japan to Hokkaido before performing a circumnavigation of Japan’s northernmost island.

Hokkaido: Japan's Wild Island

Hokkaido: Japan’s Wild Island

Designed especially for birders and those with an interest in the history, culture, and landscapes of Japan, we’ll visit a number of ports and islands along all sides of the Hokkaido coast including Otaru; Teuri, Rishiri, and Rebun islands; Abashiri; Kushiro; and Muroran. Birders and nature enthusiasts will be thrilled by visits to important seabird breeding grounds, islands blanketed with wildflowers, and national parks home to marvelous panoramic scenery and a wonderful range of native birds and mammals. Innumerable highlights await, including a visit to a colony of nesting Rhinoceros Auklets tens of thousands of birds strong; a day at Kushiro Marsh to see the iconic Red-Crowned, or Japanese Cranes; and seeking the Brown Bears of Utoro and specialty birds like White-tailed Eagle and the endemic Spectacled Guillemot and “Japanese” Pygmy Woodpecker. As an added bonus, our cruise route includes a day of birding on the Russian island of Sakhalin where Yellow-breasted Bunting and Long-tailed Rosefinch await.

While birders will delight in the program’s nature-oriented activities, others will take advantage of an assortment of enticing cultural options including the opportunity to travel aboard the famed shinkansen (high-speed train), ride a cable car to the summit of Mount Moiwa Odori, visit the morning markets of Abashiri and Hakodate, and visit a number of museums among many other planned activities.

This cruise route was constructed by Mark Brazil, an expert birder and ornithologist with Zegrahm Expeditions who lives in Japan. Representing VENT will be David Wolf, one of VENT’s longest serving tour leaders who brings many years of birding experience in the North Pacific Ocean.
