Dear friends:

On Wednesday, September 13, my colleague Barry Lyon and I will host a free webinar, the last in our 2017 series of webinars in collaboration with Zegrahm Expeditions, in which we’ll discuss VENT’s upcoming cruise: Seychelles & Madagascar with Aldabra Atoll, October 20-November 6, 2018.

Seychelles and Madagascar with Aldabra Atoll

Seychelles and Madagascar with Aldabra Atoll

For this special departure (VENT hasn’t been to the Seychelles in eight years), we’ll travel aboard the elegant Silver Discoverer on a western Indian Ocean odyssey that features three days in the lovely Seychelles Islands, two days at incomparable Aldabra, and five days in remote northern Madagascar before finishing with visits to Reunion and Mauritius, the latter two locations never before visited by VENT.

The western Indian Ocean is home to some of the most beautiful and biologically unique places on earth. Birding is but one component of this trip that includes extraordinary snorkeling opportunities; searching for endemic mammals, reptiles, and amphibians; visiting beaches of mesmerizing beauty; and Zodiac cruising to pristine coral reefs.

Birders will be thrilled with opportunities to seek specialty endemic birds including Seychelles Kestrel, Seychelles Sunbird, Seychelles Parrot, Seychelles Paradise-Flycatcher, and a wonderful variety of seabirds. We’ll call at La Digue, site of Anse Source d’Argent, a beach of exceptional beauty. We’ll stop at Praslin, home of the famed Coco-de-mer Palms, and Poivre, where we’ll snorkel over coral gardens teeming with dazzling tropical fish. We’ll spend two days at the legendary World Heritage Site of Aldabra Atoll, home to Aldabra Giant Tortoises, the endemic “Aldabra” White-throated Rail, and a paradisiacal lagoon filled with sea turtles, rays, and giant clams. We’ll sample the biodiversity of northern Madagascar with visits to the Nosy Hara Archipelago and Mount Amber and Masoala national parks, each location filled with fascinating botany, mammals, endemic birds, and reptiles. At least four species of lemurs are possible. Our voyage will conclude in Reunion and Mauritius, volcanic outposts known for lush forests, picturesque waterfalls, and endemic birds.

While birding and natural history observation are of paramount importance, everyone will want to sample the extraordinary opportunities for snorkeling at Poivre and Aldabra. Throughout the trip, our visits to one island paradise after another will deliver exceptional photographic opportunities and even options for cultural excursions. Representing VENT on this cruise will be tour leader Machiel Valkenburg, an expert on Palearctic birds.

Best wishes,

Victor Emanuel
