Brad McKinney was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1959. He has been an active birder for 12 of the 26 years he has lived in South Texas. He teaches environmental and aquatic science at the high school level, and the biological sciences at the University of Texas at Brownsville. His recent writing projects include A Checklist of Lower Rio Grande Valley Birds (1998), A Birder's Guide to the Rio Grande Valley (American Birding Association), and articles for Bird Watcher's Digest. Brad also conducts birding seminars, leads birding tours in Texas and Mexico, and has been the Field Trip Chair (1995 and 1998) for the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. He and his wife currently reside in Rancho Viejo.
