Steve Heinl
More Information
Steve Heinl grew up in Oregon, where he began birding at a young age. He earned a B.S. in biology from the University of Oregon, and was a member of the Oregon Bird Records Committee before moving to Alaska in 1990. Steve has since birded all over Alaska, and worked as a bird guide for Larry Balch's Attours trip to Attu Island for eight tours (33 weeks) from 1992 to 2000. He was a member of VENT's amazing Aleutian cruise to Attu in 2006, and is preparing himself for the wildlife spectacles and birds the 2008 trip will produce. Steve currently lives with his wife and two daughters in Ketchikan, in southeast Alaska, where he researches salmon runs as a fisheries biologist for the State of Alaska. His main interest, however, is the status and distribution of Alaskan avifauna, particularly in the seldom-birded Ketchikan area where he has mined rich Alaskan shockers like the House Finch and the House Sparrow.
