Aboard Le Ponant

The Seychelles, islands considered by many the most beautiful in the world, are a true tropical paradise. With its idyllic beaches, coral reefs, and spectacular snorkeling, this remote archipelago is one of the world's most alluring travel destinations. Among birders, these islands are world-renowned for their endemic birds and huge seabird colonies.

VENT is chartering Le Ponant, one of the world's most beautiful three-masted sailing vessels, for a cruise in these majestic islands off the east coast of Africa, March 8-24, 2009. Boasting well-appointed rooms, excellent cuisine, and ample viewing space on the decks, Le Ponant promises an exciting and comfortable voyage of discovery.

Our Seychelles adventure will be limited to 56 guests and will visit all of the major island groups. We will have the opportunity to search for all or most of the islands' 12 endemic birds and many other regional specialties, view giant tortoises, walk on pristine beaches, and enjoy world-class snorkeling. A special emphasis on Aldabra will reveal the magic of the island Sir Julian Huxley described in 1870 as "one of nature's treasures and should belong to the whole world." Beyond its amazing natural beauty, Aldabra is a biological mecca, often referred to as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. Our time here will allow for exploration of the magnificent lagoon that forms the center of the atoll and the surrounding coral islands where more than 270 species of flowering plants, giant tortoises, enormous colonies of frigatebirds, and a variety of noddies, boobies, and tropicbirds all thrive.

The Seychelles cruise will be led by VENT leaders Victor Emanuel, Peter Roberts, and Barry Lyon. South African ornithologist Ross Wanless will also be part of the staff as an ornithologist and lecturer. Finally, we are especially honored to have famed marine biologist and photographer, Joel Simon, as an expert member of our staff.

The cruise fee is $12,500 in double occupancy from Victoria, Mahe.
